The Sun Will Come Back

The Sun Will Come Back explores the complex emotional landscape of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as the winter blues, which I experience. The NHS describes S.A.D as ‘a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern’. It is estimated that 1 in 15 people in Ireland experience S.A.D.

The Sun Will Come Back aims to capture the subtle, yet overwhelming, shifts that come with the changing seasons. Screenprinted images echo the blue tones of evening light, just before the sun fully sets. Tangible motifs, such as nature and the tides, combined with more abstract imagery, create work that seeks to visually describe how it feels to experience S.A.D.

If this is something that you, like me, experience: I hope that this work reminds you that, like the seasons, emotional landscapes are ever-changing. There can be hope that comes with the return of spring.

The Sun Will Come Back was first exhibited at Hustle, Belfast, in November 2025 and also takes the form of a self-published, screen-printed photobook (see below)

This project was supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
